National Nothing Day 2020: According to the National Day Calendar, Every year 16 January celebrated as national nothing day. In this day no one celebrate any event. National Nothing Day is celebrated for not celebrating anything. Speaking in simple language National Nothing Day can be most accurately described as an anti-holiday.

History of  National Nothing Day

A day to celebrate nothing was created in 1973 by San Francisco Examiner columnist Harry Pullman Coffin to be the ultimate unevent that would “provide Americans with one national day when they can just sit without celebrating, observing, or honoring anything.” According to legend, he created this non-holiday because he was tired of special interest groups laying claims to an ever increasing number of days on the calendar.

Purpose of National Nothing Day

It’s really not an easy thing to do, doing nothing. Though many of us practice it daily it isn’t something that we ever really perfect. To become skilled at doing nothing requires a great deal of planning which sort of defeats the point of the day.

Now Who sponsor National Nothing Day?

Coffin died in 1981. The day he created continues now under the sponsorship of Coffin’s National Nothing Foundation, Capitola, California. It is listed each year in Chase’s Calendar of Events. It is not, however, an official national holiday, not recognized as a national holiday by an act of Congress.

Customs, Traditions And Celebrations

The whole purpose of National Nothing Day is to do nothing, a task which is increasing difficult to do in our 24 hour 7 day a week culture. However, that is how the day is supposed to be observed – or rather non-observed. So pull up a chair and make sure that you don’t do anything for the entire day.

How to celebrate National Nothing Day?

While it may be a good day to celebrate nothing at all, we suppose putting nothing in a glass and setting it on a table might suffice for celebration. You might leave your diary page blank on every January 16th. Don’t mark anything on the calendar on the 16th, either. It would be interesting to see what would happen if you sent a blank email dated January 16th. How many replies would you get saying, “There’s nothing here.”

For people whose birthday lands on January 16th, wrap an empty box. That should elicit and a nothing response appropriate for the celebration.

When asked, “What are your plans, today?” your response should definitely be, “Nothing.” What else would your answer be on a day like today? Now that we think about it, “Nothing” works well as an answer when recognizing the day.
So go back to bed, sleep the day away. Although, if you are sleeping you are still doing something so I guess that doesn’t apply. Just how do you do nothing? That requires thought and then you are doing something.
